Women had a voice within the Quaker religion, which lead female 'Friends' to often have positions of religious leadership. The 'Friends' did not have trained preachers, but rather ordinary people. Quakers viewed social hierarchy to be untrue, and not Gods word.

Ann Austin and Mary Fisher where the first female Quakers to visit the English North American colonies. They arrived in Boston, Massachusetts (Massachusetts Bay Colony) on July 11th, 1656. Mary and Ann were eventually arrested and sent back to England.
